About Magic CyclesYour local bike shop for over 20 years.
Michael Boone opened Magic Cycles in 1993 with the aim of expanding the cycling community in the High Country and it’s surrounding communities. While we always have our eyes both towards expansion and providing an excellent experience to our out of town visitors, the collective head and heart of the shop are anchored in Boone.
The staff of Magic Cycles are riders, first and foremost. We are focused on offering engaging and friendly service in the shop, inspiration on and off the bike, and stocking the products we believe in. We want to offer a quality experience to you because we expect the same; ultimately we want you to feel the same unbridled joy on the bicycle that we do, to experience the glory of the high country in full communion with it’s difficulties and rewards.
MEET OUR TEAM
Our talented team of cycling enthusiasts offer a unique blend of experience and innovation.
Michael C. Boone: Owner/President
Michael came to Boone to major in Art with a Concentration in Corporate Design at Appalachian State, and left with more than a degree- he came away with a passion for cycling. While pursuing his degree, he began racing and riding mountain bikes, as well as working at Boone Bike & Touring. After school, he continued his time working at and managing other shops, including Pedal Power, Performance Bike, and Rock ‘n Roll Sports, before deciding to strike out and open Magic Cycles. Since opening Magic Cycles, Michael has been able to pursue involvement in the local cycling community, such as serving on the board of both Blood Sweat and Gears and The Boone Area Cyclists. He was also able to earn his Race Mechanic’s Certificate from USA Cycling, and work for the Cheerwine Women’s Professional Cycling Team as a soigneur. When Michael isn’t riding, wrenching, or overseeing day- to- day operations in the shop, he enjoys spending time with his wife and four kids, collecting and shooting guns. and working as a licensed massage therapist.
Hunter Budd: Manager
Hunter was forged in the fires of the legendary Mt. Tam, and as such, was influenced to start racing mountain bikes in 2006. After spending his formative years on both the west and east coasts, Hunter attended App State and received his bachelors in geography in 2014, while competing with the App State cycling team. In the years since he has been expanding his knowledge of riding and exploring the high country and beyond. When he’s not trying to manual everything in sight, he is probably hiking, riding moto, or snowboarding.
Charlie Shuford: Mechanic
Francesco Marafino: Mechanic
Merv Davis: Head Technician
Merv has quickly become a staple of the high country since he moved here from West Virginia. He graduated in 2015 with a degree in Parks and Recreation Management at West Virginia University. Here he had the opportunity to both grow as a cyclist and a bicycle technician. After cutting his teeth at several local bike shops, he worked as the service manager at Pathfinder West Virginia. We’re excited to have his experience and knowledge in our shop. In addition to his technical work, Merv is an accomplished Road, Mountain Bike, and Cylocross racer. When not in the shop, you’re likely to find him spending time with his lovely girlfriend, planning dog ownership, or on the bike. That’s just about it, and he’s perfectly fine with that. In the end, it doesn’t even matter.
